WHAT IS LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS (LSS)?
Lumbar spinal stenosis is most commonly caused by the gradual aging of the structures of the spine, leading to narrowing of the spinal canal. The spinal cord nerves in the lower back are compressed as a result of the narrowing of the spinal canal. Contributing factors that cause this to occur include thickening of ligament tissue, bulging discs, and formation of excess bone. Other causes of LSS include: Direct physical injury from an auto collision or a fall; and strain in the back or neck caused by such things as poor posture, heavy lifting, and repetitive physical activity.
SYMPTOMS OF LSS
Numbness, pain, and/or tingling in the legs, feet, and buttocks are the most common symptoms of LSS. Other symptoms include leg and thigh stiffness and pain in the lower back. In severe cases, control of the bladder and bowels can be lost. Relief is found from sitting or leaning forward. The symptoms are worsened by standing straight, walking, and bending backward.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE MILD® PROCEDURE WELLINGTON?
The FDA cleared the mild® procedure in Wellington as a safe, long-lasting solution to pain caused by LSS. Thousands of patients have experienced improved mobility and significant pain relief from the treatment. The following are basics of what can be expected when the mild® procedure is performed:
- The patient is given a local anesthetic and light sedative, which are usually sufficient. A general anesthetic is virtually never needed.
- The doctor makes an incision approximately the size of the opening in a drinking straw, and he uses an imaging machine for guidance for the remainder of the procedure.
- Using specialized tools, small pieces of bone and excess ligament are removed, which immediately decreases nerve compression.
- A bandage placed over the incision is sufficient, and stitches are not needed.
- Patients are usually released to return home on the day of the procedure.
