MEDIAL BRANCH BLOCKS/FACET INJECTIONS

MEDIAL BRANCH BLOCKS/FACET INJECTIONS JUPITER

Certified Spine & Pain Care

For patients with back pain possibly caused by facet joint changes associated with arthritis or with mechanical low back pain, Dr. Edwin Maldonado uses medial branch blocks or facet injections for pain treatment.

WHAT IS A MEDIAL BRANCH BLOCK OR A FACET INJECTION?

A medial branch block involves injecting a local anesthetic and/or a steroid near the medial branch nerve that supplies the joint. A facet block provides back pain relief by injecting a local anesthetic and steroid into a joint in the spine. Multiple injections may be required if more than one joint in the spine is indicated.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU GET MEDIAL BRANCH BLOCKS/FACET INJECTIONS

You will sign a form of consent for a medial branch block or a facet injection. When it’s time for the procedure, your blood pressure will be checked. Fluoroscopy is used during the procedure, which helps the doctor accurately guide the needle. If the procedure is in the neck, an intravenous is started. Antiseptic soap is used to cleanse the back. A local anesthetic is used to numb the skin, which may feel like a burning or stinging sensation.

Next, the doctor makes the injection, after which the injection site is cleaned and covered with a bandage. Once the blood pressure is checked, you are discharged. Arrangements should have already been made to drive you to your destination.
